Software Tools for DE

DiscussionsCategory: The 24 StepsSoftware Tools for DE

I’m looking for a software application to follow up on the 24 step process, collateral creation and ideally interface it to a Product Management software (Jira, Aha, ProductBoard). I don’t want to do this over spreadsheets, and thought the DEToolbox product would meet that requirement. It seems like that tool only supports basic creation of written docs, but nothing beyond that… I’m struggling to find a good reason to use the DEToolbox product…
I’d like to understand if there are other tools DE practitioners are using…

Hey Javier, I created the DEToolbox app and am very aware of its limitations (it was created more for a classroom context). Since DE is a framework, it should be tool-agnostic, and generally, I encourage people using DE to use it with a tool that is already part of their toolstack. Introducing a new tool/set of tools and methodology just adds unnecessary complexity. Anything that helps track tasks + write conclusions would work:

  • Jira + Confluence
  • Notion
  • Google Docs + Sheets (or Microsoft Word + Excel, which are less collaborative than Google’s tools)

The team collaboration aspect is essential to it. 😉

Javier,
Interesting question and will be interested to hear what others think – the collective wisdom of a group is more than any one individual which is the power of the community.
My thoughts are as follows:

  1. There is some stuff from the DE Workbook which will be helpful and the digital worksheets from this book are on this site at https://www.d-eship.com/articles/de-workbook-worksheets-now-available-in-digital-form/ – interestingly, this was the #1 most popular post of last year on this site so there is an interest in this topic.
  2. Glad Marius Ursache responded above as he was the author of the DE Toolbox which people have found quite helpful.
  3. All of this said, I would say proceed with caution. The DE 24 Steps is not an algorithm but rather a guiding framework to be used with a lot of judgement and improvisation. It absolutely should not be a black box machine that gives you an answer and the answer is the value. The value is gained from a structure way to arrive at a possible product that is new but unique for a targeted customer. Each instance is unique and requires understanding of the steps along the way which will be crucial to make adjustments. Even if it works, there is always an expiration date on success and the knowledge gained in executing the highly iterative process is the real gold that will help guide you as you have to make adjustments to changes in the market place or technology landscape. Don’t automate too much and lose the understanding of what got you to your current and future hypotheses.

Hope this with Marius’s answer helps. Wish there was an easier answer but that is not how it works.

I’m in the same boat as Javier, and looking to see what is out there with a goal of finding something that teams can use during and  “post” accelerator training that will allow for continued collaboration with mentors and/or sponsors.

Thanks Marius, Bill, and Rebecca,  I think the context of my comment is close to Software Entrepreneurship and Product Management. The 24 step is very appealing but the lack of a digital collaboration environment and integrations to established tools, makes it difficult to integrate to existing workflows. In my particular situation it\’s a little ironic to be managing a novel software innovation project, while relying on word and excel tables 🙂  I am not suggesting a blackbox / algorithm or any thing of the like. On the contrary, I believe that creating templates to cover 24 DE steps in common Product Management applications (Aha, ProductBoard, Jira) would be good for DE to be adopted at a larger scale and support practitioners.  Happy to provide some more details / engage in follow up discussions. Thanks for your reply!    I
