The Disciplined Entrepreneurship Toolbox
Stay ahead by using the 24 steps together with your team, mentors, and investors.
Imagine a world where every aspiring entrepreneur has a seasoned co-founder in their pocket, capable of doing 80% of the upfront R&D by creating market segmentation, crafting pricing strategies, and developing product pipelines —all in a matter of minutes. This isn’t a futuristic concept; it’s the reality created by MIT’s latest innovation, a generative AI code-named the Entrepreneurship Jetpack.
The AI Copilot in Action
Developed by Bill Aulet and his team at the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, this AI is unlike any another —it’s a transformative force that can reshape the landscape of innovation and entrepreneurship. But don’t take my word for it. See for yourself.
Case Study 1: EV Charging On-Demand
To illustrate the power of this tool, let’s consider a real-world example: an on-demand EV charging service using battery-equipped trucks. Watch as the AI, given only this basic concept:
- Develops a market segmentation
- Conducts a competitive review
- Provides pricing recommendations and lifetime customer value forecasts
- Develops a product roadmap with capacity planning
All of this is accomplished in minutes, a process that would typically take weeks or even months of research and analysis.
Case Study 2: Accelerating Innovation Programs at Opportunity International
While launching an AI tech accelerator for Opportunity International, we faced a challenge: our global development workers possesses advanced degrees in humanitarian fields, but they struggled with the entrepreneurial aspects of innovation.
Enter the AI CoFounder. After reviewing over 200 human-centered concepts from our field staff, we coached the top 20 through to functional prototypes using the JetPack. Our innovators called it “mind-blowing.”
The result? Within 6-months of kicking off our program, we’re now refining the tech and testing our top 6 POCs with target audiences in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, India and Colombia. These POCs help Opportunity eliminate extreme poverty by innovating new solutions in financial inclusion, education, and agricultural development. This is the real-world impact of AI-assisted innovation.
The Human Element: AI as an Amplifier, Not a Replacement
It’s crucial to understand that this AI tool is an assistant, not an autonomous operator. Leadership still requires … leadership. But therein lies the beauty of this AI. By streamlining the traditional aspects of R&D, it amplifies the focus on these quintessential entrepreneurial qualities:
- Courage
- Judgment and intuition
- Networking
- Bias for action
- Customer empathy and active listening
Like a jetpack, the AI needs human guidance and interpretation. But also like a jetpack, if you know what you’re doing, it can dramatically accelerate your progress.
The Broader Implications: A New Era of Innovation
The potential of this AI copilot likely extends beyond what I can imagine, but I’ll surface what I see:
- Accelerated and Improved Innovation: By compressing the time to create new ventures and allowing entrepreneurs to rapidly revise and evaluate scenarios, we’re not just getting more innovations—we’re getting better ones, potentially leading to more rapid advancements across industries.
- Educational Revolution: I can personally attest to how accessible (and addictive) entrepreneurship becomes when people see with their own eyes how easily they can develop a product or go-to-market plan. Imagine entrepreneurship courses where students can iterate through dozens of business ideas in a semester, gaining practical experience that was previously impossible in academic settings.
- Augmentation of Human Creativity: The AI doesn’t replace human innovation; it enhances it by handling grunt work, allowing entrepreneurs to focus on primary research, creativity and strategic thinking.
- Ecosystem Amplification: Venture studios, VC’s, accelerators, and corporate innovation programs can use this tool to increase their capacity and effectiveness, both what they birth in-house as well as how they evaluate their investments – nurturing more high-potential ventures.
- Democratization of Entrepreneurship: This AI is going to make entrepreneurship accessible to people who may feel entrepreneurship is outside their wheelhouse, including underrepresented sectors. Imagine nurses, teachers, or community workers—experts in their fields—now empowered with entrepreneurial capabilities at their fingertips.
Conclusion: Shaping the Future of Entrepreneurship
The AI copilot is not just enabling the existing landscape of entrepreneurship—it’s reshaping it in ways we’re only beginning to understand. By lowering barriers to entry, accelerating the innovation ecosystem for educators, corporations and startup communities worldwide – we’re unleashing a new wave of innovation capacity.
This entrepreneurial breakthrough serves as a powerful counter-narrative to prevalent discussions about the impact of automation on labor. While many focus on AI’s potential to replace jobs, tools like the Entrepreneurship Jetpack demonstrate that AI can also enable job creation. It’s another testament to the unpredictability and opportunities we’re navigating as a society in the age of AI.
As we stand on the brink of this new era, the possibilities are profound. The next world-changing idea could come from anywhere—a service worker in the US, a community health worker in rural India, or a marine biologist in the Galápagos.
Welcome to the era of the AI cofounder—where entrepreneurship is truly for everyone.
Note: This AI code-named the Entrepreneurship Jetpack, or “Eship Jetpack” for short, lives on MIT’s Orbit platform.
