The Market Segmentation process identifies multiple potential market opportunities. Once you have a list of potential markets, PMR on a finite number of market segments will help you determine which ones are best for your idea or technology.
The goal of this search is not to provide a perfect solution but to present a wide spectrum of opportunities as you start to think about where you will focus your business. PMR, which involves talking directly with customers and observing them, is by far the best way to identify good market opportunities. This research will help you select a beachhead market in the next step. Problems that arise later are most often the result of the entrepreneur not doing a rigorous job of market segmentation up front, so invest your time and effort here and it will pay many dividends later
